Chess Classes offered with Kathy Obenberger
Scheduled Tuesdays 1 to 3
There is no fee for the classes, but tournament fees may apply if the child chooses to participate.

This class teaches the principles of playing chess. Anyone who thinks they may be interested is welcome. No prior knowledge is required – just a desire to learn. The class consists of two parts. One part is a class time for learning chess principles and the second is time to practice the skills that were taught. Students are assessed as to their current skill level and assigned to a level. There will be three or four levels depending on participation and the skill level of the students. A student can move up to the next level once they demonstrate the skills and discipline necessary for the higher level. The goal of the classes is to prepare the students to participate in the Regional Team Tournament and State Team Tournament (if we qualify) held in March. However, participation in the tournaments is not required.

Minimum of 8 students required.

Gary Pass has been playing chess since he was a child and competed on his junior high and high school teams. Since moving to Crossville he has begun competing in tournaments again. He became involved with this chess class two years ago to teach the intermediate class. This past year he taught all levels. He currently holds the position of Publicist with the Cumberland County Chess Club.
